Full update of the route editor functionality

Updated editor functionality is live
The new functionality of the route editor, including multiple trips and schedules, is already available to all registered editors. It’s very simple to get acquainted with the new functionality: go to the list of routes in your city and click the “Add a new route” button or go to any route page and click “Edit”.

Last time we showed you the part where you can add multiple trips for one route and presented the functionality for managing trips (copying, importing, etc.). Some of the covered functions did not make it into the first version of the new editor; they will be implemented later. This time we are going to show how to add timetables to the trips and tell you which rules in the user’s guide underwent changes.

Trips & Schedule
As we said earlier, adding routes or editing them can now be divided into 2 stages:

  • Adding textual information: number, transit agency, fare, payment methods, transport classes, etc.
  • Adding trips and timetables for them
For each trip, you can add up to three different timetables that complement each other. The timetable section consists of 4 main subdivisions:
  • Calendar dates – provide an opportunity to indicate the seasonality of the route or indicate the dates of the temporary flight
    • All year round – the route runs annually without major interruptions
    • Seasonal – you can select a season using dates fields and enter your schedule for it. If there are several seasons, you need to add more timetables
    • Temporary – select operating dates, including years. It can be used for trips that have changed during the road repair works or until the announcement of the opening of new routes
  • Days of week – select the days of the week during which the route operates. If the schedule differs on weekdays and weekends, then in the first timetable you can select only weekdays and in the second – only weekends
  • Departures – select one of two ways of specifying the scheduled times:
    • Interval – an interval schedule where you can set operating time and interval (headway). You can add several different intervals during the day
    • Departure times – a list of exact departure times from the first stop of the trip. Used for trips with irregular intervals, suburban, intercity routes
  • Departure times preview – allows you to see the end result for your schedules so you can double-check it with your source information on the official website

Which rules have been updated
In connection with the transition to the new functionality of the route editor, we updated the basic editing rules. Most of all the changes affected the timetables and trips. The rules for the rest of the text fields remained almost unchanged, some of them were deleted, because they are no longer used.

You can view the pages that have been updated using the links in the user guide below. Also, the corresponding pages are marked with the icon “NEW”:

New rules (in short)
We introduced the concept of “trip”: it’s a combination of stop sequence, trajectory and schedule of a route which goes from the first to the last stop in one of its directions. Thus, a bus route is usually represented with two trips: outbound and inbound. There are no more restrictions on the number of route variations; you can add additional trips which are shorter than regular, work only on holidays, etc.

Since all 3 fields - Active days, Availability and Schedule or interval - are now obsolete in the new editor functionality, please pay attention to the new “Trips” section. It contains all the rules for filling out schedules for public transport routes trips, and also explains how to work with them, how to name, sort, and so on.
