Senegal

The system of roads in Senegal is extensive by West African standards, with paved roads reaching each corner of the country and all major towns. Senegal’s only passenger rail service, which ran 761 miles between Dakar and Bamako, Mali was recently closed because the operator went bankrupt. Although the track remains intact, it is unclear when passenger rail service will resume in Senegal. Senegal’s main inter-city bus transport are mini-buses known as cars rapides. In order to board these white, blue, or yellow vehicles, visitors must flag them down and call out their destination to the apprenti, the name of the boys who collect fares in the back of cars rapides. Visitors must bang loudly on the sides of cars rapides or signal to the apprenti when they reach their desired destinations.
