Nauru

Transport in Nauru includes pedestrian, bicycle, automobile, train, and airplane. Rail transportation is used for moving phosphate from the island’s interior to the cantilever jetties on the island’s western coast, in Aiwo District. For this purpose, a 3.9 km long, 2 ft(610 mm) narrow gauge railway was built by the Pacific Phosphate Company in 1907. Outside of a courtesy shuttle service between the Menem Hotel and Nauru International Airport, Nauru’s only public transport is a community bus which makes hour-long journeys across the island several times a day. The island’s three miles of rail track are reserved for phosphate mining areas.
