There are some commercial operators (KM Bunda Maria, KM Marine Teratai, KM Akhsar 7, KM Satria Express 88, KM Sumber Raya 4/5, KM Queen Mary, KM Elizabeth 3) which sail all the way from Ternate to Obi island over Babang or Kupal (Bacan island). The journey typically takes 1 day, and has sometimes plenty of waiting time in the ports it is passing. Mind that with all sea transport in Indonesia on these kind of boats there are often delays due to organisational disfunction, weather, ...

The boat usually leave Ternate at night, arriving early morning in Babang/Kupal, after which they go through to Obi - arrival afternoon/late afternoon. From Obi island departure is in the morning (9am), arriving in the late afternoon in Babang/Kupal, and leaving around 9pm to Ternate. Usually there is a boat every day between Ternate and Obi - either via Kupal or via Babang.

Basic travel are bunk beds with usually AC on that deck; there are normally also rooms to be rent (2-4 people) at a premium.
