Côte d'Ivoire

Cities in the Ivory Coast are quite spread out, especially large towns like Abidjan and Yamoussoukro. Thankfully, there are good transport services that provide convenient means to get around. In the capital, there is a complex system of taxis involving two types of cars: orange cabs, which can legally operate anywhere in the city and offer solo or shared rides (this type is more expensive than the color-coded taxis that operate in designated neighborhoods) and green taxis, which serve the Koumassi area. Other districts have their own colored car services. Taxis in Ivory Coast rarely have meters, which is why it is customary to agree on a price before setting off. Fares depend on the distance covered. There are many private companies offering cabs in Ivory Coast, some of the more reliable ones being Taxi d’Abidjan, Darah and Davison. The only train connection available in the Ivory Coast runs from Abidjan to the city of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, but because this route slices through rebel territory, this is not an advisable form of transport for foreign travelers. Choose the bus service instead. Daily routes run between neighboring West African capitals, while inter-city travel is comfortable and reliable. Several bus lines run through Abidjan and while they are cheap, they can easily get crowded, making taxis the more logical choice for visitors.
